Furniture when selling a house: sell, give away - dispose of?

Old furniture when selling a house: 4 ways to get rid of it sensibly

The wall unit full of photos, the large dining table for the whole family and the cosy couch on which you have spent countless evenings - your furniture is full of memories. But when the time comes to move into an age-appropriate home, the question arises: What happens to the cherished pieces? Not everything will fit into your new home, and a lot of things can't simply be thrown away. We show you four ways in which you can sell, give away or dispose of your furniture - without stress and with a clear conscience.

1. sell furniture: The right approach for the best price

Some of your furniture still has value decades later - or is even worth more than when you bought it. A good way to sell furniture is online via platforms such as eBay Classifieds. Here applies: Good photos are the key. You don't need professional equipment, a smartphone is all you need. Pay attention to this:

  • Good light: Take photos in daylight to make details visible.
  • Open spaces: Clear away decorative items or private objects.
  • Individual offers: Offer each piece of furniture separately - this increases the chances of a sale and the price achieved.

Alternatively, you can use a Rummage dealer order the furniture. They will come directly to your home and buy the furniture as a package. But beware: many dealers try to negotiate prices down. You should therefore enquire in advance about the reliability of the dealer and the current value of your furniture.

2. give away or donate furniture: Give a second life

You don't want to make a profit, but you want to know that your furniture is in good hands? Then Give away or Donations the ideal solution. Ask your friends and family first. Friends or relatives are often happy to receive pieces in good condition. Alternatively, you can offer furniture free of charge online via platforms such as eBay classifieds or in local shops. Facebook groups advertise.

Donation organisations such as the DRC or other social organisations are often happy to accept furniture. Even slightly damaged pieces can be interesting - especially for the Upcycling trend. With a little creativity, young buyers transform antique or second-hand furniture into unique living highlights. A note such as „Perfect for upcycling projects“ in the description attracts potential buyers.

3. hand over furniture with the house sale: Win-win for buyer and seller

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best: leave the furniture to the new buyers. They can decide for themselves what they want to keep and take care of the disposal of the rest. This option offers several advantages:

  • You save time and effort.
  • Buyers are happy to receive free furniture.
  • If the furniture is badly worn, you can easily adjust the price of the property to create a win-win situation.

This agreement can be recorded directly in the purchase contract - so everything is clearly regulated for both parties.

4. fast disposal by removal company

If you already have a Removal company ask about additional services. Many companies offer the option of disposing of old furniture directly or selling it on. They often take it to the recycling centre for a small fee. This saves time and nerves: everything is done in one day and you don't have to worry about anything else.
