How do I get a care degree?

Old age often brings challenges, especially when a relative becomes in need of care. But how do you apply for a care degree and what steps do you need to take? You can find the most important information here.

Assess care needs

Before you apply for a care level, you should clarify how much care you need. Does hourly care help or is round-the-clock care necessary? Use care needs calculators offered online by care insurance companies to get a first impression. If inpatient care is required, apply for a care level from the care insurance fund. A health care proxy and living will make the whole process easier, as they provide you with the legal basis to make decisions for the person in need of care.

Optimum preparation of expert reports

After the application, a representative of the Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds (MDK) - or Medicproof in the case of privately insured persons - will assess the care requirements on site. Prepare yourself well by having the following documents ready:

  • Doctor's letters and diagnoses
  • An overview of the medication taken
  • Notes on restrictions and everyday problems

Care counsellors from the health insurance company or care support centres can help you to work out the most important points before the assessment appointment. The assessor will check motor and communication skills and assess what support is required. Care levels range from level 1 (minor impairments) to level 5 (severe impairments).

Objection in case of rejection

The care insurance fund must decide on the application within 25 working days. If a care degree is recognised, you will receive retroactive financial support from the date of application. If the long-term care insurance fund rejects the application or determines a care level that is too low, you can lodge an appeal within one month.
