Is a photovoltaic system worthwhile? Advantages & tips

Photovoltaic system: Is the investment worthwhile despite falling remuneration?

In 2004, owners received 57 cents per kilowatt hour for their solar power. In 2019, it was less than 11 cents - and the tariff is continuing to fall. Here we explain why a photovoltaic system is still worthwhile.

Falling costs for solar systems

The feed-in tariff set by the state is based on the Investment costs for solar installations. While 6,500 euros per kilowatt peak (kWp) were still required in 2006, a kWp only cost around 1,200 euros in 2016. Despite the lower remuneration, the costs for solar systems have also fallen considerably.

The power rating kWp describes how much electricity a system generates under optimal conditions. On single-family homes, privately used systems are usually between 3 and 10 kWp in size.

Yield of your solar system: What influences it?

How much electricity your photovoltaic system actually supplies depends on several factors:

  • Alignment of the roof: A south-facing orientation with an inclination of 30 degrees is ideal.
  • Site conditions: Sunny regions have more hours of sunshine and higher yields.
  • Own consumption: High electricity consumption in the household reduces the amount fed into the grid.
  • Average outside temperature: Excessively high temperatures can reduce efficiency.

If you live in a sunny region, you benefit from higher yields. But even less ideal locations are worthwhile - especially due to the Own utilisation of the generated electricity.

Save electricity costs through own use

The rising electricity prices make photovoltaic systems particularly attractive. Owners can reduce their energy costs in the long term with their own system. The system becomes even more efficient with a Electricity storage, which makes it possible to benefit from the energy generated at night or in winter. However, electricity storage systems are currently still expensive and are no longer subsidised by KfW.

Financial support for your solar system

Nevertheless, the investment is worthwhile, as owners can continue to pay for the system itself. KfW subsidies to take advantage of these programmes. In addition to nationwide funding, many federal states and local authorities offer their own programmes to support solar energy.

Use online tools to calculate the potential savings. On rechnerphotovoltaik.de for example, you can find out how much your investment will earn over the next 20 years.

Increasing the value of the property through solar systems

A photovoltaic system has a positive effect on the Value of your property from. Studies from the USA show that houses with solar energy systems sometimes achieve significantly higher prices - especially in regions with high solar yields. However, the increase in value depends heavily on the efficiency of the system.
